Dear Edmonson School Family,

Our hope is that all of you get the opportunity to practice Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw as we begin the final quarter of this school year.  I also hope that you will spend some time each day reading to your student.  Reading to your student sharpens their imagination, improves their vocabulary, encourages healthy dialogue, and fosters a love of reading.  Give the gift of story this season.

Read by Grade Three

Read by Grade 3 Lamphere logoIn 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help. The law states that third graders may repeat third grade if they are more than one grade level behind beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.

We've posted some resources and Facts for Families on our Curriculum Department website to help families understand the Read by Grade Three Law so they can support their child.  You will find a variety of videos and fact sheets from the Michigan Department of Education and reading tip sheets for parents of toddlers through third grade students.  Please be sure to check back often as we'll be updating this site with more info and activities to strengthen our youngest learners reading, writing and comprehension skills.

If you have any questions regarding the Third Grade Reading Law, please contact Jane Jurvis, Lamphere's Director of Curriculum and Instruction.  Email: or phone (248) 589-1990
